One Room Challenge - Fall 2019 - Week 5 of a Kitchen Remodel

Updated: Sep 14, 2022

Ready for another update on the One Room Challenge? Can you believe that we’re five weeks into this challenge, and only one week from the Grand Reveal!!!

The One Room Challenge is a bi-annual event hosted by Calling it Home. It showcases 20 featured participants and many guest participants as they renovate a single room, documenting over six weeks. The One Room Challenge kindly shares all of the blog entries and the finished spaces at the end of the six weeks.

We are almost done! So, this week is the final touch: backsplash, cabinet handles, pendant lights, appliances, etc. Of course, you will have to wait until next week to see the reveal of the entire kitchen This week, I will touch on what you will see in week six. Remember the mood board I created for the kitchen remodel? Gold, Calacatta, Bali's color.

Let's see what happened this week.

My contractor installed the backsplash I selected: It is a stunning honed Calacatta gold marble stone with thin gold aluminum strip accents from GBI Tile & Stone Inc. It adds an extra spark of detail and enriches the kitchen. Impressive, isn't it?

Here are some pictures of the installation of the tile. Marble can be fragile, and I really insisted on having each little gold strip be perfectly straight. It was not easy, but my professional tile contractor did a great job!

For the faucet, I chose a polished brass pulldown from the Royden Collection by Signature Hardware. Finding the perfect gold accent for your kitchen can be challenging.

With little choice in showrooms, you may have to order a few different faucets to find the perfect one, the perfect gold finish. And then, find the matching disposal flange and sink strainer. If you want to do "gold," go for it, it's stunning but be patient to find all you need in the same tinge of gold... But it is possible I found at Kohler the perfect disposal flange and sink strainer, which matched perfectly with the gold faucet.

Various gold kitchen cabinet handles and knob

The cabinets didn't require any handle, but to me, They looked "unfinished," so I decided to add gold handles for an added touch of style.

After some research, I found the perfect ones on Etsy, a great store HookedPullMeKnob, with a large selection of pulls and knobs. Kloe, the manager, really took care of my order and shipped it on time for the project!

Here is a picture of the high polished luxury gold cabinet pulls and knobs I used for the project.

Simple, elegant, and stylish!

What next? Appliances If you are like me, I love to cook. So, we made a functional choice over design for the project. I needed a double oven and really wanted a convection oven! It makes a big difference in baking delicious tarts and quiches! Samsung is the only brand on the market offering this new double convection oven option. So, I bought all matching appliances with Samsung.

Lighting. Before the project, the kitchen possessed only recessed lights. This is a good solution in a kitchen and provides the perfect glow when cooking. I added some improvements with dimmable switches and connected lights!

It's so convenient! "Hey Google, turn off the kitchen light." What a great innovation!

All lights in the house are now connected to the Google assistant.

Adding pendant lights is an excellent way to add more personality to your kitchen. To keep the floor plan open between the dining room and the kitchen, I chose something light and bright, like some glass pendants. I selected a model from Possini Euro reminding me of the wine carafes. I lived in Bordeaux (France), a well-known area for wine (Saint-Emillion, Pessac-Leognan, Saint Estèphe, etc.).

So, you just discovered the backsplash, the faucet, cabinet pulls, appliances, and the pendants. You haven't seen the new counter stools yet. They just arrived! Thus, we will discover it next week with the Final Reveal.
