One Room Challenge - Fall 2020 - Week 6 - Master Bedroom Makeover: The Reveal Day

Updated: Sep 14, 2022

Wow! It is time for the big reveal of the Master Bedroom Makeover!

Huntington Beach interior designer Samia Verbist

First time on my blog? Welcome and thanks for coming by! My name is Samia Verbist, I am a French Interior Designer based in Huntington Beach, California. I obtained my Bachelor Degree in Interior Architecture in Paris, France and created my own interior design company in California 5 years ago. I love creating interesting designs for my clients and coming up with interiors that go beyond what they would have thought of. I love wallpaper, gold and turquoise color! My favorite place on earth is Palm Springs! "

Yes, it is time for the big reveal! I loved this fall One Room Challenge edition. It was such an amazing way to show you the make over of one room in a short time. Thank you Linda Weinstein and all your ORC team who organize this event twice a year in collaboration with Better Homes & Gardens. It was my third participation as a guest participant and I really enjoyed every step of this six week makeover!

I'm sure you can't wait to see the final result but let's have a quick look at how the room was six weeks ago before we started:

The bedroom was pretty neutral, nothing special, just a "regular" room. The goal was to create something with more personality, color and comfort. We also wanted to have a direct access to the backyard. So, during the last six weeks, we all (my contractor and suppliers) worked hard to change radically the room to create the "after" shown in this surreal picture:

This is not a fake! It is exactly the same bedroom and I completely fall in love with it now! It is so bright, colorful, comfy and "so chic"! I named it my "So Chic Boho" master bedroom.

We changed the ugly carpet for an amazing vinyl floor (one that imitates hardwood really well) in a light beige color with a ceramic bead finish (week 5). As you can see, I chose a large plank model to enhance the "real wood" aspect of it.

The window was replaced by French doors (week 2), and this week DeEtte Kirkconnell (Blinds plus Designs) installed custom made curtains from floor to ceiling. I like the gold touch of this velvet, a perfect match with the wallpaper.

As you can see on the picture below, we also replaced the interior doors with new 3 panel style doors from Masonite (Livingstone series). They are way more classy and elegant than the original basic plain door.

Now, let's talk about the decoration:

I love juju hats and I really wanted to have some in this room. With Dorothée from OhJujuAtHome (France), I designed this three piece composition inspired by the wallpaper colors: black, gold, and white.

Those juju hats bring softness and they add an ethnic touch in the room.

Nowadays, juju hats are contemporary wall hangings but for hundreds of years the Bamileke tribes (Cameroon) have been creating these traditional ceremonial headdress for their tribal chiefs, royal families and dignitaries to wear during tribal ceremonies.

Isn't it lovely?

Between juju hats, wallpaper, pillows, headboard and lamps, I tried to define the perfect balance between patterns, colors and textures. What do you think? Love it?

Add another detail, but is it really a detail? Each piece, color, pattern, texture or material has its own importance in Design. The combination of all of them make the perfection of an interior. So, let's focus now on the chandelier:

This is an unique tassel chandelier created on my demand by Jurgita, owner of Boho Lights (company based in Lithuania, Europe).

This piece completes the bohemian touch of the room. It was made from high quality cotton. Each tassel is surrounded by delicate gold threads which bring a touch of sophistication to the boho style.

I wanted the larger frame to be a quatrefoil shape, so it was forged with a sturdy gold metal frame especially for the project. The lower interior frame is round to contrast with the quatrefoil. The result is just wow.

Before there was no ceiling light, so the contractor had to run new cables in the ceiling. Adding this tassel chandelier gives lightness to the room. I cannot be more satisfied!

If you remember on week 4 and week 5, Armando worked on the new wardrobe: Now it is a larger and the opening is taller, and most important more organized. He installed new sliding doors. Bye bye metal old ones, welcome wood shaker doors! The doors are also higher, almost up to the ceiling which creates more space inside and eventually makes the room look bigger. I kept the design of the closet doors simple, just one shaker, so it does not compete with the new 3 panel interior doors.

Now, wardrobe has shelves, drawers, jewelry 's drawers and of course rod rails for hanging all the lady's dresses!

Redesigning the closet allowed me to redesign the adjacent closet in the hallway! I created a unique shoe cabinet with new custom doors equipped with large bamboo handles in black, and here is the new shoe storage cabinet:

Now let's talk about the Cockatoo chair:

I really wanted a chair or something to occupy the space at this corner of the room.

So, I was looking at all my suppliers to find the perfect element to fit my design when I saw this cockatoo chair... I totally fell in love (yes I can fall in love with furniture and decor...) with this stunning Cockatoo chair (Selamat Designs) inspired by Australia's most iconic wallpaper designer Florence Broadhurst.

It was THE chair for me...and then I discovered who was Florence Broadhurst and this chair became more interesting to me. She was an amazing woman in her century, she lives a series of vivid, fantastic lives. She was a singer, a French couturier (even if she is Australian...), a landscape painter and then she created a luxury hand-print wallpaper business ! She drawn so many patterns which are iconic now like her chinoiseries and I love chinoiseries....

Here are other details of the room:

So, during the fall and winter, we need comfy atmosphere with faux fur throw, woven texture, and darker color. That was the initial version of this room. There is one think I like to do when I design a room it is to give the opportunity to make some little changes based on the season. During the summer season, we don't need faux fur throw or wove. We need refreshing and bright colors and light textures. The best and easiest way to do it is to change pillows for example.

So, here is the summer version of this "So Chic Boho" master bedroom:

Just some slight differences but more convenient for summer.

If you miss the first 5 weeks and would like to see all the steps of this Master Bedroom Makeover project, you can still read all my previous posts:

Now it is time to say: "Thank you" to all the people involved in this project:

First, my contractor Armando Acevedo whom I asked so much in a short notice and he did it with a lot of attention to details as usual! Then, all my suppliers like Jimmy Vo (Prosource) who helped me select the flooring, Jennifer Nemeth (Eastern Accents) who did everything she can to make the delivery of all the beautiful pillows and faux fur throw on time even when it was unavailable for weeks, Robin Munson (Elements of Design) who customized the duvet cover and the euro shams with a beautiful trim, DeEtte Kirkconnell (Blinds plus Designs) who took care of my curtain and adjusted it to my large French doors, Jurgita (BohoLight LT, Lithuania) who made my chandelier's dream, Dorothée (OhJujuAtHome, France) who created just for this project those three fantastic juju hats. So, thanks to all of you!

A special thanks to my dear friend and talented photographer Ning Wong (Ning Wong Studios) for the fantastic photos of this project!

This challenge was a fantastic adventure and I am so grateful to share it with all of you!

I hope you had as much fun as me in following this 6 week makeover!

See you in spring 2021 for another One Room Challenge!
